Here's a little bit from my story. I switched to first person in the middle of my nano cause its easier to write. I'm keeping all the words written towards my word count cause hey, I did write them all in November! :)

Anyway, the underlined stuff is the stuff I'll probably change later. Words need to be replaced with something better, and the population percentage I'm unsure of. 15% is high, but I don't know if I want to go higher..anyway. Here it is. Yaaaaay. >_>

Dr. Vince Callert – Chapter One

I remember it like it was yesterday, when it fact it was years ago. It was the end of spring, the beginning of summer. The weather in California was starting to heat up, climbing from the mid seventies and low eighties to the low ninties and at times, scraping by and pulling its way into the three digit temperatures.

Things were tense in the country at that time. A few years prior there was an epidemic that hit. Some sort of virus that seemed to just pop up out of nowhere. The virus was deadly, but no one knew that at first. The government did what it was good at; keeping secrets. Some people died from the virus at the time but The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) only released the name of one person and swept the information about the others under the rug, thinking that they could gain control of things before they got out of hand.

Soon a few more people fell ill and died. By then they had spread it to their families, friends. The HHS couldn’t just sit on it anymore. They began a quarantine effort, trying to isolate the disease as they worked to figure out its cause and find a cure. Long story short the virus ended up taking out nearly 15% of the population before it was finally halted and cured.

The years after were a mess. The issue of abortion became a major political and public concern. Political, because the population decrease had a severe effect on the entire nation, not just emotionally but physically. Jobs with gaps that needed to be filled, schools who’s attendance had shrunk to half its size, a consumer market with a good chunk of its consumers deceased. Soon the government was encouraging people to have two or three kids, if not more, in an effort to bring the population back up, even if it would take years. But people were reluctant. Families couldn’t afford more than one kid sometimes, and the government wasn’t about to allot money as an incentive. This led to the idea that maybe, just maybe, abortion should be illegal. This, of course, sparked public outrage. Soon protests from both sides of the argument began to spring up outside abortion clinics around the nation, mine included.

I worked, then, as an abortion doctor in downtown Livingston, California. Everyday I went through the same thing. Some days it would be the pro-life activists hanging around the front of the clinic picketing, hollering and shouting. Other days it would be the pro-choice activists there to show their support for the work that my colleagues and I did. And sometimes both groups would be there, arguing with one another, trying to convince eachother that their side was the right one.

This went on for a few years, two or three. The government seemed to toss around the idea of outlawing the practice, leaving everyone in a sense of limbo. Until that one week in the middle of May, the week that started everything.

Just made it to 1700 today, which is good. I hope to do better tomorrow. I think my story is finally kicking into gear. I love my characters, which is great since I only met one of them before two years ago during my last Nano. =)

I'll post an excerpt tomorrow sometime. <3
